Gravitational Faraday Rotation in Binary Pulsar Systems

We study the gravitational Faraday rotation, on linearly polarized light rays emitted by a pulsar, orbiting another compact object. We relate the rotation angle to the orbital phase of the emitting pulsar, as well as to other parameters describing its orbit and the orientation of the angular momentum of the binary companion. We give numerical estimates of the effect for the double-pulsar system...

Axion response in gapless systems.

The strong topological insulator in 3D is expected to realize a quantized magnetoelectric response, the so-called axion response. However, many of the materials predicted to be topological insulators have turned out to be metallic, with bulk Fermi surfaces. Following the result of Bergman and Refael [Phys. Rev. B 82, 195417 (2010)] that the surface states of the topological insulator persist ev...

Interplay of plasmon resonances in binary nanostructures

By introducing the difference permittivity ratio η = ( 2 − 0)/( 1 − 0), the Green matrix method for computing surface plasmon resonances is extended to binary nanostructures. Based on the near field coupling, the interplay of plasmon resonances in two closely packed nanostrips is investigated. At a fixed wavelength, with varying η the resonances exhibit different regions: the dielectric effect ...

The Massive Binary Pulsar J 1740 − 3052

The young pulsar J1740−3052 is in an 8-month orbit with a companion of at least 11 solar masses. We present multifrequency GBT and Parkes timing observations, and discuss implications for the nature of the companion.

PSR J1829+2456: a relativistic binary pulsar

We report the discovery of a new binary pulsar, PSR J1829+2456, found during a mid-latitude drift-scan survey with the Arecibo telescope. Our initial timing observations show the 41-ms pulsar to be in a 28-hr, slightly eccentric, binary orbit. The advance of periastron ω̇ = 0.28 ± 0.01 deg yr is derived from our timing observations spanning 200 days. Assuming that the advance of periastron is pu...
